IV stands for intravenous which means “in the vein.”
IV fluids combine sodium chloride and sterile water. Our saline solution uses 0.9% sodium chloride. The water in IV fluids rehydrates the body, which is about 60% water. Sodium chloride provides electrolytes.
For example, 4 is denoted IV, 9 as IX, 40 as XL, etc.

Lactated Ringer's Solution (also known as Ringer's Lactate or Hartmann solution) is a crystalloid isotonic IV fluid designed to be the near-physiological solution of balanced electrolytes.
The most commonly used crystalloid worldwide is normal saline which is used in the management and treatment of dehydration (e.g., hypovolemia, shock), metabolic alkalosis in the presence of fluid loss, and mild sodium depletion.
Hypotonic: The most common type of hypotonic IV fluid is called half-normal saline — which contains 0.45% sodium chloride and 5% glucose . This type is often used to treat dehydration from hypernatremia, metabolic acidosis, and diabetic ketoacidosis.
Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: swelling hands/ankles/feet, muscle cramps, unusual weakness, headache, nausea, extreme drowsiness, mental/mood changes (such as confusion), seizures.
When someone is dehydrated, IV therapy is administered, replenishing them with potassium and saline solution to make them fully hydrated. You do not have to eat or drink while administering the IV fluids.
