Overview. Anemia is a condition in which you lack enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to your body's tissues. Having anemia, also referred to as low hemoglobin, can make you feel tired and weak.
Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that gives the red color to blood. It carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Anemia has three main causes: blood loss, lack of red blood cell production, and high rates of red blood cell destruction.
Common causes are blood loss, reduced or impaired RBC production, and the destruction of RBCs. The most common type is iron-deficiency anemia. It sometimes develops due to a diet lacking in nutrients, Crohn's disease, or the use of certain medications. A doctor can use a CBC blood test to help detect anemia.
